: benoit p - a stranger

I have been following this photographer on Flickr for quite a while now. Being in Montreal at the moment, I actually feel I can understand, even sense these images better for having visited the city of their inspiration. There is just something in them so real and yet so sensitive to the people they portray. This is true even though they are actually "strangers" to the photographer. It is very beautiful work that makes me think of a modern day Rembrandt. An artist who uses portraiture, technique, and light to illuminate the subjects soul. Visit these on Flickr. : oil

It is amazing how quickly an icon can be created. As horrible as the news from the Gulf sounds, it seems to come home by the images of animals caught in the oil. Maybe that is the very definition of an icon. Something that can carry meaning beyond that very thing's own intrinsic common qualities. I don't even want to look it up. I will go with that definition for now. See the image below and ask if that definition applies. See the rest of the images from the story on Lens, the NYTimes Blog, and ask the same question.

Said one commenter from VT - "You feel uneasy even "analyzing" this sort of victim portraiture. It's like a photograph of war dead, but with the crooked finger of blame pointed at us -- at our culture, at our laws, at our corrupt technoarrogance. We are the shepherds. What have we done to these uncomprehending innocents? We have burned the fields on which our flock grazed. And then we poisoned them all."

: dulux walls, lets colour

Letscolour is a campaign for Dulux Walls by Euro RSCG London. It's "… a worldwide initiative to transform grey spaces with colourful paint."

There is a website - www.letscolourproject.com, a blog, and this amazing film below by director Adam Berg. The video was shot over 4 weeks in Brazil, France, London, and India. The concept is simple. Transform gray dull spaces/places with amazing colors. No actors, just real people and you can see galleries from these shoots here.

Very powerful stuff. Reminds me of those chapters in Tipping Point where McDowell explains the incredible shift in crime on the NY Subway system after the trains and stations were cleaned up. Of course there were other things that led to the transformation, but I wonder what happened with these neighborhoods?

: leah giberson

I have been meaning to post this one for a while. Leah is a designer we use here at Isobar from time to time on Flash projects. She is also a local artist who produces these beautiful pieces below. I love the simple, modern and almost moody feeling of these. Also, I find the small details very intriguing. For instance, the reflections on the trailer home, the shadows cast by the pool slide, or even just the garden hose re-tractor just to the left of the house in the third image below. Gicle prints of her paintings in limited edition runs are available for sale at her Etsy store. Click the images to view their Etsy pages. There are also many more to view and choose from there.

: alex trochut

Came across this amazing designer again yesterday through a shared post. I saw hi speak in Lisbon a couple years ago. Amazing talent, and the work is just gorgeous. He seems to occupy that increasingly rare spot of graphic designer and illustrator. On top of that, his range in terms of styles seems boundless.

Head on over to http://www.alextrochut.com/ to view his entire portfolio.

: cocodot

Having used Evite earlier this year to plan a surprise party, I have to say I was underwhelmed by the system and the options. Along comes Cocodot. The design options are quite nice, much easier to use, and the whole setup makes a lot more sense including the social network components. Not a huge fan of the black background which makes the overall experience a bit busy with the competing visual elements that to sit on the background.

Especially nice are the myriad choices of visuals, ability to use your own design, or customize existing designs with the panels seen in the screen grab below. All right. Which one of you is using this to plan and invite me to a party?

: behind the bp logo

This looks like a Greenpeace initiative launched even before the latest BP disaster in the Gulf of Mexico. Not surprising, since despite their beautiful logo (branding by Landor) they have had a string of horrible accidents that point at some serious mismanagement issues. This user generated Greenpeace campaign asks members to create new logo for BP that better represents them as a company. Ouch. That's gotta hurt a brand. However, they have bigger problems at the moment.

The oil now entering the marshes on the Gulf coast will probably kill large swaths of that ecosystem for decades to come. Such a tragedy. It hurts to watch this because it makes you mad at the oil companies, but it also hits upon the truth, that we are all in some degree to blame.

The logos from the competition below come from the campaign's corresponding Flickr pool.
